A very long standing friend messaged me yesterday morning, at short notice to see if I was free for lunch. We meet up for lunch every couple of months, I had plenty to do, but couldn’t think of anything I would enjoy more than a chat over a glass of wine.
We met up in Beckenham, a nice little town, and put our noses to the window of a few independent restaurants on the high street but they did not look promising, vegan wise. We have been known to use Pizza Express as they do a cheese less pizza which suffices for vegan, however we spotted Zizzi, which we have visited before. I like Zizzi’s, they are really up with the times. They have a vegan menu. Great, it is short, which is ok, there are just a few items for each course, but such a treat not to have to wade through a full menu trying to spot that one item, if we are lucky that’s vegan. After all when you first sit down in a restaurant, there is so much to catch up on, who wants to spend ages poring over the text.
I ordered, the vegan margarita pizza which had a vegan cheese. I think it was a coconut based, and asked them to add the caramelised onions just to liven it up. Sorbet was one of the pudding items, and the wines are mainly vegan.
My friend has some health issues which I think would be helped by eating a more plant based diet, certainly removing dairy I am sure would help. We discussed this without me preaching, and we popped into a supermarket on the way home where I showed her my recommendation for a brand of ice cream that would suit her and all the family if she were to remove dairy from her diet. I actually think if she served this one up, without telling them it is soya based they really wouldn’t notice.
Needless to say that Zizzi is in the building that David Bowie had a folk music club in when he lived in Beckenham in his youth. There are a number of commemorative items around this area of the high street, including pictures of him in the restaurant.
Here I put a review on TripAdvisor if you are interest: Zizi – Beckenham
